Recycled thoughts

When we were taking the trash and creating things with it, I thought about the old footage I threw away. What could I do with old footage that never made it to the cut? This project taught me that nothing is useless just unused. I feel as though I have the newfound ability to always be able to produce something meaningful from scraps.

Facing Fears

In my experiment i called my mom and told her that my girlfriend was pregnant.  My fear was not being able to stick to my plan because of an extreme mishap. The class was shocked i chose my mother to experiment on but understood what I was talking about. Ms. Beth said she would make a new rule because of it. My expected reaction from my mother was completely wrong. She did not cuss me out, she was not thrilled but she was not completely negative. She was very supportive and made me feel like I still had a chance and there was still hope for my personal future. Most importantly she made me feel as though she knew it wasn't something I couldn't handle. This made me feel even more confident about what Im doing. Im not sure I would do something like that to my Mom again but if I did it would be to her face so I could see the reaction.
Sadly I dont know the name of the girl that did my favorite project which was passing out slips of paper to everyone to find out what their opinion of her was. She did this to escape the fear of being judged Im always focused on trying to be friendly because I know what I can be perceived as give the way I dress and my hair etc...  This project made me think that in my project thats what I wanted, to find out how I would be judged. In mine however I learned about her feelings on me, my girl, and the situation.

Whats Stuck

1. The most important thing I took from this class was that the fishbowls we are put in have a purpose which is to guide but they cannot stifle us but must make us use the limits we are given in a creative manor.

2. I also held on to the idea of taking time to daydream and ask those wild what ifs. Those questions are the seeds of innovation.

3. I also held on to the singing bowl, not only because it is amazingly awesome but because it reminds me that there can always be an alternative use and view of something.

This class has been extremely different because it has allowed me to take what i want from lectures and discussions and find how they benefit me. Its like the bible in the sense that everyone can find there own meaning in it whether it be literal or metaphorical. The class has adapted to me and allowed me to search and find my creativity in different avenues through different techniques like finding new uses or creating one.

During the remainder of the class I would like to learn about more creative people and there techniques for discovery. I would also like to keep experimenting on new ways to create and come up with ideas to create.

New Uses

The video that i made was not the best idea for a totem so I decided to take another piece of the experience which was a beer cap. I took beer caps and made hot new hair accesories.

Take away

Well there were awesome things taken away from class. I especially enjoyed the singing bowl and talking about using things beyond their expected uses. I was completely thrown by the pony situation but to each their own. People really had awesome totems and the super bubbles were cool too.

Take Away

The thing that stood out the most were the rocks because of the way they were presented. I was trying to take the rocks for face value but when she turned off the lights they were really amazing. The way and colors that glowed off of these rocks were really nice. I liked hearing everybody's tiger ideas and eating the cookies

Tiger Project

what if i dressed up like a tiger?
what if I wore real tiger skin?
what if tigers are black and thats why they are locked up?
what if I freed a tiger in school?
what if we only locked up the tigers that were threatening?
what if panthers were police and tigers were criminal?
what if I wore a tiger print thong?
what if I wore tiger print chaps?
what if I got eaten by a tiger?
what if tigers had jail outfits

Book and what if class reflection

In class I honestly thought my idea was so far fetched that everyone would look at me like I'm crazy but instead there were a few ideas similar to mine and people showed interest in them which was shocking. I didn't expect for most people to understand and they did which was really cool. The thing that stood out the most in class was the book with all the pictures I practically read it. Those sayings and pictures were amazing and really held my interest most of the class. They were well put together and the pictures were creatively made. This was the highlight of the class for me. We talked about asking the big what if and how it leads to daydreaming and the pattern of questions it leads us to such as consequences and possibilities. We received an assignment that i needed clarification for but i got something funny lined up.

Book 2.0

My version of a new type of book would be one that you could plug into and just download to your memory. You would experience the book like a dream. It would be the ultimate virtual experience. This would be like a guided subconscious experience. If there was a main character you would be them but all  the dialogue  would be pre programmed into you. If it was an educational book imagine everything that you can do in the realm of a dream. This is NOT 3D this is NOT VIRTUAL REALITY this is almost a self induced coma where everything is as real as it is in any other dream except the user can retain knowledge obtained from the dream.

How to read a book

Go to a library, bookstore, or your own book collection and look through the books. Please do not read any. Just pay attention to what catches your eye.
  • What is it that stands out to you? The color stands out the most.
  • Why? It is a high contrast from other books
Choose a red book and open it to page 6. Close your eyes and put your finger on the page somewhere.
  • What did you find? I found page 6 was gone.
  • If your finger landed on a paragraph, how many times does the letter P show up in that paragraph?
  • If it landed on a picture, how many straight lines are in the picture?
  • If it landed on white space, what is the white space surrounding?
  • Can you imagine the white space as a sea and the other parts (words, pictures, etc.) as islands floating in white water or space?
Using your other senses, explain what the paper feels like.
  • Is it slick or rough? It is slick and thick
  • What does the cover feel like? It feels like glossy construction paper
  • Can you feel the ink of the words if you close your eyes? Shapes and letters are slightly raised
  • Do different colors feel different with your eyes closed? No
  • What else can you discover about the paper? some of it was meant to be torn out
  • What about the cover? The cover is glossy on the back is the poster board feel to it.
Without destroying the book, unless you own it and want to, see if you can figure out how the book was constructed.
  • Is it stitched? NO
  • Is it glued? Yes and the pages can all be torn out like a notebook
  • Is there any cloth on this book or is it all paper? It is all paper
  • Is it a hardback or paperback? papperback
  • Does it have signatures? (Hint: you may need to look up what signatures are in the context of making books…) no
  • If it has signatures, how many pages are in each and how many signatures are there in the whole book?
  • If it does not, look at the glue on the ends of the spine and discribe what you see. It looks worn and blackened.
Flip through the pages and look at the end papers.
  • Is there any writing in the book, other than the printing? Yes
  • If so, what does it say? There are lines and crosses
  • Why is it there? They are apart of games and activities.
  • Who wrote it? A child
  • If you do not know, then imagine who might have written it.
  • If there is no writing in the book then how does it make you feel to know you are the first person (possibly) to think about it?
Examine the book more.
  • Are there any stains on the book? Yes like BBQ sauce
  • Are there any fingerprints? Little ones
  • What do they look like? A little kid was eating ribs and playing with the book
  • How might they have happened? a child was eating dinner and playing with the book
Look at the pages of the book.
  • What is the color of the pages? I bet they are not really white. The pages are green and blue and lined.
  • How would you describe the color? Is it warm or cold? Bright or dull, etc. The colors are all bright playful and inviting.
  • What other visual things can you explore with the book? There are a lot of games so there are actual activities.
Think about the history of this book.
  • Can you see any other evidence that someone else has handled this book? Some of the games have been played
  • What are the edges of the pages like? Describe them. They look worn and frayed like the book was carried  around
  • Can you imagine what someone else might have been thinking as they read this book? Yes, Lets play!
  • Do you think anyone else has used this book like you are right now instead of reading it? No considering the age group this book is meant for is quite young.
Flip through the pages quickly.
  • Can you hear the sound? If so, describe it. It sounds like a miniature helicopter.
  • If not, what is your experience like?
  • Can you feel the breeze? A small one because the pages are so large.
  • Can you move something with the wind generated from the book? I could move a balled up straw wrapper.
  • Could you use this book to win a game you created using the book's wind power? Yes it would be a race with the straw wrapper to cross a finish line.
Drop the book on the floor.
  • What did you experience? A fear it would hit my toes.
  • Did you sense the vibrations the book made? Yes they were small
  • Did you feel it in your feet? There was a small tingle.
  • Take your shoes off. Now drop the book. Was there any difference? the wind rushed against my toes I was still afraid my toes were in danger.
Hold the book between your hands with one hand on each cover and the book closed. Close your eyes.
  • Is the book cold? Hold it like that for at least one minute. The book was not cold.
  • Now feel the cover. Can you feel the temperature change from where your hands were to where they were not? Yes its colder where my hands were.
  • Have you ever been aware of this before when you were holding a book to read it? Not so much
  • If your heat transfers in this situation and you noticed it because I asked you to, why do you think you have never noticed it before?
  • If you have noticed the temperature of a book you were holding before, describe why you noticed it.
Smell the book.
  • What does the smell make you think of? BBQ
  • If you can't think of anything, describe the smells you can sense. (Interesting fact: Did you know that I have friends [many librarians, actually] who choose their books partly based on how they smell? Honestly.)
I do not recommend tasting the book for health and safety issues… :-)

Now, finally, read the first page. If it is just pictures, read the story of the pictures.
  • What is the title of this book? Dora the Explorer Preschool Adventure
  • Based on the first page, explain why you think the book was titled that. Because theres a huge picture of Dora
Reflect back on this entire exericise.
  • What is your experience like with the book now that you have experienced it differently? I feel a lot closer to this book having developed a strong memory for this book. Now when I see it it wont be some random kids play thing.
  • Do you still find books to be boring, assuming you did in the first place? Never thought they were.
  • What, if anything has changed for you in regards to books? Im definitely going to start looking for signs from previous owners a lot more just for kicks.
Now think about this class.
  • How did I "fishbowl" this assignment? You made us use a red book, and you gave us tasks with the book. Also you gave us questions to answer.
  • What do you think the point is of this exercise? To get away from taking everything for what it is and try observing the uncommon uses for things because thats where discoveries lie.
  • What can you take from this exercise that might help you with future projects? That there will always be new ways to expand on the way things are viewed.

What enslaves you

About a year ago I was asked to write a children's play about Kwanzaa. I was excited because I felt like I would be able to highlight all the children's talent, I would also be able to include elements of comedy because that is my strong point. I wanted to write a rap for the kids to perform.
The differences in what I wanted to do and what was done wasn't that varying. The comedy was included but some of my jokes were a bit edgy so the director made me censor them for the kids. I also did not get to put them in costumes which I felt would have added to the show. I also didn't get to incorporate any rap.
The limitations I faced were the kids ages because a lot of them were young and due to time constraints couldn't memorize an elaborate script. Time was also a factor because we only met one saturday a week for  five weeks. The director of the entire show would also tell me if I went to far and then I would have to revise the script. The biggest issue was budget. Budget controlled the amount of rehearsal time we could have had and it affected our costumes.
The limitations were keep it appropriate for school then I added more like it had to be funny and it had to be video then I worked from there.
My creation of a broken watch is to show my time limitations

Fishbowl

The most important thing was FiSHBOWL. Fishbowl means to put constraints on something whether it be a person project or idea. There should be a limit of options we have or boundaries set to guide us in projects and life in general. There should be goals that guide us rather than complete freedom.

MY BEAD

I did test shots with my new camera using the bead. I shot people holding the bead just to see how the camera works and operates. I had a lot of fun and now we might start a series involving the traveling bead. I knew I wanted to do something with video so i just had my friends hold the bead while I adjusted my camera.

1st Day Seeing SIdeWAYZ

This was our first class and we learned that we will be stretching ourselves and our creative capabilities to the brink of our brains destruction. I learned dont ask Beth if she likes something or is this good enough. THis is going to be a class that is suppose to be the fertilizer of our self growth. I am very excited and cant wait to get started
